Released in January 2014 and recently updated October 2019, the Chrome/Drive extension ZIP Extractor allows you to unzip (extract or decompress) files in Google Drive.

ZIP Extractor is available at https://zipextractor.app.

From the ZIP Extractor Chrome web store page:

  • ZIP Extractor allows you to unzip (extract or decompress) files in Google Drive.
  • The ZIP file can come from your computer or from Google Drive.
  • You can choose which files in the ZIP file to extract.
  • You can preview and download individual items inside the ZIP file without having to extract the whole file
  • After extracting the ZIP file, you can share the extracted files with others
  • ZIP Extractor supports password-protected files
  • ZIP Extractor can also open RAR, TAR, GZIP (GZ), BZIP (BZ2), and TAR.GZ files

You can add ZIP Extractor via the Chrome web store or via the red CREATE button in Drive

  • Click the '+ NEW' buttonin the upper left corner of the Drive webpage.
  • Select the 'More ->' option at the bottom of the menu, then choose 'Connect more apps'
  • Search for 'ZIP' in the search box; 'ZIP Extractor' app should appear at the top. If it doesn't, you can install from the Google Chrome Webstore directly.
  • Select and connect ZIP Extractor

Once added you will now have the option to Right-Click Open with the ZIP Extractor for .zip files stored in Drive.

Once invoked (you will need to grant access permissions for Drive on the initial launch) ZIP Extractor shows a screen with the contents of your zip archive (filenames, sizes).

You can then:

  • Select via check-box which files to extract (by default all are selected)
  • Click on any individual file to preview or download it
  • Choose Extract Now to extract into a new folder inside the current folder
  • The default name is the original zip file name with (Unzipped Files) appended
  • e.g. MyDirs.zip extracts to a folder named: MyDirs.zip (Unzipped Files)
  • Click the 'Extraction Location: Google Drive' link to invoke a Drive dialogue to select an alternative destination folder for the unzipped files.

The extraction process shows a Progress Bar during operation.

When extraction is complete, click View Files to open a new Chrome tab showing the newly created folder containing the extracted files.

Introduction

Cloud Storage can be a very convenient way you can store your data (photos, videos, music etc.) remotely using platforms like iCloud and Google Drive. You can then access your data stored in the cloud via the internet using any of your devices (computers, mobile devices etc.).

As the demand for more and higher quality media increases, so too does the requirement for more space to store such media. Since the hardware (e.g. a hard drive in an iPhone) cannot keep up with this demand, people turn to Cloud Storage to store their data - this keeps space free on their mobile device.

Google Drive is Google's answer to the people's calls for cloud storage.
